Final Product

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My media product is aimed towards the youth (18-30) and represents a rock/pop/indie type of musical taste, therefore it attracts people who are interested in this style of music. As the main artist on my magazine is female, the consumer may feel like it's swayed towards a female audience however the other content mentioned shows that it relates to both male and females.
I also wanted to encorporate personality into the photoshoot therefore I looked for ideas during research and the example is shown below:

What type of institution might distributy your media product and why?

IPC Media stributes one of the most popular magazines, NME. I have based some elements of my layout and typography on those similar to NME, for example I have used the same font on my front page quote as they have on the example I showed in my research stage. However, as I have used similar elements and my music magazine strongly relates to NME, this means that IPC would be less likely to distribute my magazine as the 2 genres are too similar, therefore another company would give it more rivalry.

Bauer Media would be more likely to distribute my magazine, although it currently owns another popular music magazine 'Q', I feel that my magazine would fit nicely within their company and be a strong rival to the productions from IPC media. However, both companies are very sucessful, therefore either would be a strong company to have as your main distributor as you'd earn a lot of profit and as they already have a good reputation, that would be quickly gained towards my medi product also.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
The media product which I have created is aimed at 18-30 year olds, both genders who are interested, passionate and open minded when it comes to choice and genre of music. The typical person who would buy my magazine would be working class so they understand the context and language which is used throughout and they would shop in places such as H&M, Republic, New Look, TopShop/TopMan and River Island. Therefore their style would be casual and also laid back at the same time, with some class but not too expensive, this also represents the price of the magazine which I set.

Bands which would be listened to by the consumer are bands such as; Kings of Leon, The Kooks, Florence + The Machine, Biffy Clyro, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, The Killers, Maroon 5, Muse, Two Door Cinema Club, The Vaccines, Reptillia, Weezer, The Strokes and Razorlight.
These artists are similar to the ones which I have used within my music magazine and I chose these so they relate and appeal to the target audience.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

From the prelim task to my final product, I have learnt more about the layout and editing within a magazine, research has improved my knowledge and my skills on photoshop have also increased as I have learnt more.
Certain techniques such as line and character spacing are important and my final production in comparision to my prelim appears to be far more professional and could be used in reality.

Audience Feedback

FACEBOOK
From uploading my images to Facebook, I asked people to comment and give their feedback, positive or negative so that I could make changes. I asked the people on my friendslist as they fall in the target audience of my music magazine so it seemed appropriate to ask them for their views as in reality they would be the people who are purchasing it.
From this feedback I plan to change the photos on my front cover and experiment with something else, the changes and the polaroid versions can be seen on the 'development' slide of my magazine.

Name of the Magazine

I chose the name 'Excess Music' as it can be shortened to 'XS MUSIC' as I have shown in the name examples. Once I had the basic idea of the name I wanted to create, I experimented on Photoshop, changing the positioning and layout of my text. The example on the right was my final idea and I chose to stick with simple fonts so that they could easily be read.

These are the final stages of the name I created for my music magazine. I chose to go with red because it's a vibrant colour and can easily attract attention, it also akes the black and white text stand out more. Through developing it onto the front of my magazine, I decided to edit it further and warp the text on the 'XS' part so that it appears to be jumping out.
After experimenting with the style and effects of the text, I added the website, date and price to the logo as it's what people will first look at, this also is a good way to advertise the website for the magazine as people are more likely to see it.

Edited Images

From choosing the best image, I have opened it in Photoshop and removed the background from it so it's ready to go onto the front page of my magazine. I've then experimented with the levels and brightness to make it look more professional. I chose this image as the placement of the arms will make it interesting to place and rearrange the text and name of my magazine around it.

My photoshoot

Photoshoot Ideas

I selected these as my 3 favourite examples as I like the poses which the artists are giving, they are very open and they show some personality within the photo. The photo on the right, is a good idea as it shows the artist is focusing in on the audience and gives the impression that they're looking at them. The other 2 examples have been selected because I like the position of their hands as it allows a good scope for development when adding the typography and different stories to the magazine.

Target Audience

The research into existing products has made me come to the conclusion that my target audience will range from 18-30 and my product will be aimed at both male and females. The genre of music will be rock/pop/indie incorporated into one, similar to the style of NME magazine. I have chose this audience as it's the similar age to me and people I know and the genre of music relates to the genre which I like, therefore I will have more knowledge and be able to create an end product that looks as professional as possible.

Research - Q

Both images that have been used are similar poses but from different angles. They're both good photos to have on the front cover as they both have wide eyes to look directly at the consumer. The layout and colour schemes used are very simple and easy to understand, I have also noticed that the artist never has text on their face so they aren't in any way covered up.  Line spacing and text lettering justification has been used in order to make all the text fit in a certain area, for example on the left hand collumn on the 'Adele' version and at the top right on the 'Lily Allen' version. The name of this magazine is simple and clean cut, the white text on the red background stands out and this is what I aim to do when creating my name.

Research - Kerrang

Kerrang is currently the worlds biggest seeling weekly magazine. The genre of music is Rock therefore it will appeal to audiences who like and listen to this style of music. This then allows them to target the audience so the advertisements, colours and content is appropriate and appeals to the consumer. The above images are examples of 2 front covers, a contents page and a double spread. THe contents page has a similar lay out to 'NME' as they lay the contents of the magazine out similarly. The use of bright colours throughout the magazine relates to the loud and outgoing genre of music, therefore they compliment each other nicely.

Research - NME

These are 2 examples of the popular music magazine 'NME'. It's well known and features many famous musicians. It's issued monthly and has similar elements such as images, title, font and layouts that are always the same. For example, the main artist is also on the front cover, the name is aways in the top left, along with subtext which mentions stories and other artists which are included in that months issue. The magazine also uses the name of the artist and never lays text over the front image, this is so the face of the artist can always be seen. This magazine is aimed at both male and female of any age who are interested in current music, hence why there isn't a dominant stereotypical colour scheme for example, pink for girls, blue for boys as it appeals to everyone.

The contents page shown here is similar to every contents page which appears within NME. The colour scheme is always the same with the white text over a black rectangular shaped box. An advertisement is also included and this will provide funding for the magazine to be made and will also involve the audience more as they feel they're getting something back from the magazine, allowing the creators to maybe increase the price. A 'band index' is displayed so the consumer can see which bands are included within that months issue, without having to look through the whole magazine.

This double page spread is based around The Vaccines and this can instantly be seen by the audience as it's the first thing you see on the page. The page seems to have a dominant sepia effect on the images and text and the shots and strokes of blue brighten it up and give it more personality.

My Aim

The brief of my AS Coursework is to create the front page, contents and double page spread for a new music magazine. On my blog I will post my research, planning and creation of this magazine.

Preliminary task

This is my preliminary task I made when the brief was to make a new college magazine. I chose to photograph one of my friends and have her as the main image, the colour scheme is minimal so it doesn't over face the audience. I have used the same font and different size text so that it all matches and is the most effective that it can possibly be.
